Not every call to a plumber is about plumbing.
This June, in the middle of the day, OX got what owner Erik Caballero calls "a really random call." A woman had found a cat trapped in a storm drain. She'd already called the fire department. She'd called animal control. "We've called pretty much anybody," she told him. "So you guys are our last resort. Can you guys come out and help?"
Erik said yes.
Getting into the drain
Erik and Caleb drove out. Storm drains aren't built to be opened. They worked at it with pipe wrenches until they could get it open. Then one of our techs went down on a rope and came back up with the cat: in our Instagram's words, "a very unhappy cat, and two guys who had absolutely no business being in there."
Nobody covered it
We called Channel 15 and every other news station in Phoenix. "Nobody wanted to cover the story," Erik says. So it went on the company résumé instead: certified cat rescuers.
Two saves and counting
It wasn't the last one. Not long after, Erik's uncle called: his cat was stuck in his car's engine and he couldn't get it out. We got that one out too. "So now we've saved two cats."
In Erik's words
From the video above, lightly trimmed:
So the story we have is, we got a really random call. It was the middle of the day, and this lady goes, "Hey, we have this cat in a storm drain. We've called the fire department, we've called animal control, we've called pretty much anybody. So you guys are our last resort. Can you guys come out and help?"
So what we did, me and Caleb, it was in a storm drain. We tried with some pipe wrenches, and we ended up having to pick up the storm drain. And then we sent somebody in there with a rope, and then he got the cat.
And we called Channel 15, we called all the news, and nobody wanted to cover the story. So now on our résumés: we save cats.
And the other day too, my uncle called me 'cause his cat was stuck in his engine, and he couldn't get it out. So now we've saved two cats.
