1,940 Repairs in 10 Years: Tempe Knows Old Lines Fail

For ten years, the City of Tempe ran its own Service Line Protection Program (SLiPP). In that time it paid for 1,940 service line repairs worth $5.3 million for the 5,000 homeowners who signed up.
That's what decades-old pipe does. U.S. Census data puts the median Tempe home at 1984, the oldest of any East Valley city we serve, and neighborhoods like Maple-Ash and Mitchell Park date to the middle of the last century. Buried lines that old crack at joints, sag, and let roots in.
SLiPP has ended. The city moved it to Service Line Warranties of America (SLWA), an optional plan with a 24/7 repair hotline (RepairsTempe.com, 1-844-257-8795). If you have an SLWA plan, call them first: their contractors do the covered repair.

No Plan? Start With the Camera

Most Tempe homes aren't on a warranty plan, and a sewer line that keeps backing up is usually telling you about the pipe, not the clog. A camera inspection shows what you're dealing with before anyone digs:
- Roots through a joint, pipe still round: clear them with hydro jetting and recheck on camera.
- One cracked or broken length: repair that section only.
- A belly (sag) that holds water and waste: re-lay the low section so it drains.
- Brittle, flattened or failing pipe along much of the run: replace the line rather than patch it repeatedly.
Ask for the camera video. It shows the problem, its location, and how much of the line it affects, so you can compare quotes.
When It's the City's Line

The City of Tempe's Wastewater Collection group maintains and repairs the public sewer collection system. If sewage is overflowing from a manhole or coming up in the street, or the camera shows the problem past your line, call the city at 480-350-2837.
Backups inside the house, and problems in the line under your yard, are private plumbing. Our $99 service call covers the visit, diagnosis and an upfront price, and goes toward the repair if you go ahead. See also drain cleaning in Tempe and plumbing in Tempe.
