Question 1

Does EPCOR soften the water in San Tan Valley?

Accepted Answer

No. EPCOR's 2024 San Tan water quality report says it doesn't treat drinking water for hardness, which runs 15 to 18 grains per gallon from its groundwater wells.

Question 2

Can an old water softener make my water worse?

Accepted Answer

It can if it isn't maintained. EPCOR's report warns that failing to maintain a home water treatment unit, such as a softener or RO system, can result in poor water quality. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance instructions or have it serviced.

Question 3

What is a salt bridge?

Accepted Answer

A hard crust of salt that forms in the brine tank and keeps water from reaching the salt, so the softener runs without actually softening. Breaking it up and checking the regeneration settings usually fixes it.

Question 4

How do I get rid of the chlorine taste?

Accepted Answer

EPCOR suggests chilling water uncovered in the fridge overnight or adding lemon. A reverse osmosis system or carbon filter removes chlorine for good.

Question 5

Is there a softener deal in San Tan Valley?

Accepted Answer

Yes: a free RO system with a water softener purchase, or $100 off a stand-alone RO installation. See the coupons page for current terms.
