16.5 Grains: Some of the Harder Water Around

The City of Chandler reports hardness from 5 to 20 grains per gallon, averaging 16.5 citywide. The U.S. Geological Survey calls anything above 10.5 "very hard," so most Chandler homes are well past that line.
The city is clear that hardness isn't a health issue. It's a plumbing and appliance issue: scale on faucets and shower glass, film in the dishwasher, and sediment building up in the water heater.
The range is wide because Chandler blends three sources. About 60% comes from the city's surface water treatment plant, about 20% from the Santan Vista plant it shares with Gilbert, and the rest from 32 city wells.

The Numbers a Softener Actually Needs

A softener is programmed with more than hardness. Chandler's FAQ publishes the other two values installers ask about:
- Iron: under 0.3 ppm in every city well, low enough that a standard softener handles it.
- pH: 7.2 to 8.2.
- Hardness: up to 20 grains depending on your area, so we set to your water, not the citywide average.
The city also recommends flushing your water heater once a year if you have a softener. We can do both on the same visit.
RO and Fluoride: Know Before You Buy

Chandler notes that reverse osmosis typically removes at least 80% of most constituents, including fluoride. That's a plus for taste and dissolved minerals, and worth knowing if you rely on tap water fluoride. The city suggests asking the RO manufacturer about specifics.
Chandler disinfects with chlorine, keeping a residual of 1.0 to 2.0 mg/L (about 1.6 typical). If the chlorine taste is what bothers you, carbon filtration or RO handles it; a softener alone won't.
