White Crust on the Faucets, Spots on Every Glass?

Wipe the shower glass and the spots are back by the weekend. The faucet aerator clogs with white grit. The dishwasher leaves a film no detergent fixes.
That's hard water, and Mesa has plenty of it. Hardness is calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water. When it heats up or dries, it leaves scale behind: on fixtures, inside the water heater, and in every appliance that uses water.
The City of Mesa's 2025 water quality report puts average hardness at about 12 grains per gallon in the City Zone and 16 in the Eastern and Southern Zones. For a sense of scale, 1 grain per gallon is 17.1 mg/L, so 16 grains is about 274 mg/L of hardness minerals.

Why Mesa Hardness Swings So Much

Mesa's water comes from three places: Salt and Verde River water through SRP for the City Zone, Colorado River water through the Central Arizona Project for the Eastern and Southern Zones, and city wells that blend groundwater into all three. The mix changes through the year.
That's why the city's 2025 samples ranged from 0.4 to 25 grains per gallon of hardness, and total dissolved solids from 190 to 970 ppm. A home that gets more well water at certain times of year can see much harder water than the zone average.
The city recommends setting a softener to 16 grains per gallon and adjusting from there. We set yours to your zone and your water, and show you how to adjust it if the spots come back.
Softener, RO or Filter: What Does What

They solve different problems, and many Mesa homes use more than one:
- Water softener (whole home): removes the hardness minerals that cause scale and spots, protecting the water heater, fixtures and appliances.
- Reverse osmosis (one tap, usually the kitchen): filters drinking and cooking water much further, including dissolved solids a softener leaves behind.
- Whole-home filtration: reduces the chlorine taste and smell. Mesa disinfects with chlorine and chlorine dioxide, so carbon filtration is what most people notice first.
