Safe to Drink. Not Always Great to Drink.

Mesa's tap water meets federal and state standards. What people notice is the taste, and Mesa's 2025 water quality report explains why.
Total dissolved solids (the minerals and salts in the water) ranged from 190 to 970 ppm across Mesa's 2025 samples, and sodium from 45 to 212 ppm. The EPA's secondary guideline for dissolved solids is 500 mg/L, the level where many people start to taste salt or minerals. It's an aesthetic guideline, not a health limit.
Mesa also disinfects with chlorine and chlorine dioxide, with chlorine readings from 0.02 to 2.04 ppm across 2025 samples. That keeps the water safe in the pipes, and it's the smell some people notice in the shower and at the sink.

Whole-Home Filter or Kitchen RO?

They solve different problems:
- Whole-home carbon filtration treats every tap and shower. It targets chlorine taste and smell, and protects the rest of the house from sediment. It does not remove dissolved minerals.
- Reverse osmosis (RO) goes under the kitchen sink with its own faucet, and can feed the fridge's water and ice. It pushes water through a membrane that removes most dissolved solids, so it's the fix for that salty or mineral taste.
- A water softener removes hardness (the scale on fixtures), not taste. See water softeners in Mesa. Softener plus RO is the most common pairing.
Check the Certification

Home water filters aren't federally regulated, so certification is how you know a system does what the box says. Look for the NSF/ANSI standard that matches your goal:
- NSF/ANSI 42: aesthetic effects such as chlorine, taste and odor
- NSF/ANSI 53: specific health-related contaminants, such as lead
- NSF/ANSI 58: reverse osmosis systems
- NSF/ANSI 401: certain emerging contaminants
On lead, Mesa's report advises flushing your tap for several minutes before drinking after water has sat, and notes you can also use a filter certified by an ANSI-accredited certifier to reduce lead.
